Auto insurance: complete guide

Updated Aug 2026 · in-depth guide

Auto insurance is mandatory across Canada, but how it is priced varies a lot by province, driver and vehicle. Canadian averages range from $1,500 to $2,400 a year depending on where you live.

1. Liability limits explained

You choose a liability limit — typically $1M to $5M — that pays for damage or injury you cause to others. It is the most important number on your policy.

Doubling the limit usually costs far less than double — going from $1M to $2M is often only 10-20% more.

2. Driver factors

Driver age forms a U-curve: young drivers and seniors pay the most, with the sweet spot around 35-50. A clean driving record, years of continuous insurance and defensive-driver courses all help.

At-fault accidents and convictions stay on your record for years and can raise premiums 30-50% or more.

3. Vehicle factors

Newer, pricier vehicles cost more to repair and therefore cost more to insure; SUVs, trucks and vans carry higher rates than sedans. Safety ratings and theft rates also matter.

Our calculator lets you compare how vehicle year and type change your estimate instantly.

4. Provincial differences

Quebec has the cheapest auto insurance (government no-fault body), while Ontario has some of the highest rates due to accident frequency and fraud. BC runs a hybrid public-private system.

2026 hikes are hitting Alberta (+21.3%) and Ontario (+11.8%) especially hard — a good reason to shop around at renewal.

📊 ON averages $1,600-2,400/yr; BC $1,800-2,200; AB $1,500-2,000 (2026).

5. How to lower your premium

Bundle home and auto, raise deductibles, keep a clean record, ask about low-kilometre and telematics discounts, and compare at every renewal.

In BC, choosing a higher deductible on your own-damage coverage is one of the fastest ways to cut costs within the ICBC system.

FAQ

Why is my insurance more expensive as a new driver?+

Experience is the strongest predictor of risk. New drivers can pay 1.5-2.5x the base rate. It drops quickly with claims-free years of licensed driving.

Can I compare auto quotes myself?+

Yes — our calculator shows instant multi-carrier estimates, and a licensed advisor can bind the best option for your exact record.

What does collision vs. comprehensive cover?+

Collision covers damage to your vehicle from a crash; comprehensive covers non-collision events like theft, fire, hail and vandalism. Both are optional in most provinces.
